MEGANISSI
According to historians, Meganissi has been settled since Homer's
time. It has three villages, sandy beaches and sea caves, one of which
was named for the Submarine, Papanikolis, that was sheltered there
during WWII.
CORFU
Odysseus' last stop on his journey home to Ithaca, the island owes
its sophistication and charm to the meshing of the different civilizations
that have occupied it. Abundantly endowed with natural beauty, green
and fertile Corfu has numerous long sandy beaches as well as historical
monuments.
Sights: Old fortresses, museums,
churches, monasteries, Pontikonisi and bazaars in villages when they
celebrate religious dates. Casino Delicacies: Numerous dishes with
Roman names, Ginger beer.
PAXI & ANTIPAXI An exquisite miniature world.
Fertile and green with pine, olive and fruit trees, vineyards and
gardens all leading to amazing beaches with crystal waters, either
sandy ones or rocky ones with spectacular white cliffs, punctuated
by delightful coves and intriguing grottoes. Sights: 19th century
villages, Venetian castle, windmills, monasteries, unspoiled beaches.
AntiPAxi produces a very potent and well known wine.
LEFKADA Mountainous
and totally green, with coast sloping gently down to the sea. It is
sheltered from the wind and has thickly wooded islets. Magnificent
green bays with crystal waters among other natural beauties attract
visitors. Sights: ancient sites, Venetian castle, monasteries, museum.
KEFALONIA
A land of breath-taking gold or white beaches, deep coves, underground
lakes, rugged rocky shores, green and fertile areas with cedar-like
fir trees that grow nowhere else in the world, olive and fruit trees,
caves with unusual stalagmites and pale blue waters shattering into
a myriad of phantasmagoric colors. The book Captain Corelli's Mandolin
takes place here and the follow-up movie was filmed here.
Sights: Katavothres (a rare geological phenomenon, where sea enters
through an opening in a rock and "disappears"), churches,
ancient and Roman ruins, monasteries.
Delicacies: "Mandola" and other almond flavored sweets,
local pastries.
ITHACA
Home of Odysseus, Homer's hero, an earthly paradise with green mountains
and captivating coves, with caves for exploring, lovely beaches for
bathing, un-crowded hamlets, strong nightlife.
Sights: Cave of The Nymphs, monasteries, and museums.
Delicacies: "Ravani" A semolina syrup sweet.
ZAKYNTHOS (Zante)
According to the Venetians, this was the "flower of the Orient",
with the emerald green sea- home to sea turtles, the pine-studded
mountains, slopes with flowers of every kind, the musical people and
their famous hospitality. Zakynthos is certainly most known for the
shipwreck beach which is a favorite photo for postcards.
Sights: Venetian towers, churches
of the 12th and 14th century, springs, caves.
Delicacies: "Mandolato" a nougat pastry.
CORINTH CANAL
The connection between the Aegean and
Ionion islands with a 3,2 miles long, narrow channel, completed in
1893, offering an outstanding view either from the top or passing
through the channel aboard a ship.
PATRA
The third largest city in
Greece, with Neo-Classic buildings among modern ones, big squares
and the harbor, where visitors may enjoy nightlife and excursions
to wineries (Achaia Clauss), Medieval castles and old churches.
GALAXIDI
A beautiful town attracting visitors from Athens and other places
all year round. A wqonderful place to overnight and travel from here
to see Delphi rather than the busier city of Itea. Sights: Neoclassical
buildings and stone mansions, nightlife and tavernas with fresh fish,
beaches.
PARGA
A picturesque town overlooking the small harbor with
houses in a full spectrum of colors, which is built on the remains
of a Venetian castle. A real jewel on the mainland that has been affected
by all civilizations that have possessed it.
