NISYROS
Volcanic, dark and
picturesque, this small island is contrasted by the whiteness of its
houses and the bright colors of their doors and windows. Charming
villages perch on the crest of the hills above the crystal waters
and lovely beaches. Sights: Castles, churches and traditional houses.
Known for its pumice stone mining at the north of the island.
TILOS
This small island captures the imagination of visitors because a prehistoric
dwarf elephant once lived there. Beautiful un-crowded beaches, a variety
of birds, monasteries and the ancient town within the capitol will
amaze visitors. It is known for its lush farmland producing items
from tobacco to almonds.
SYMI
Small green valleys punctuate the steep
and rocky island with beautiful bays and pebbled beaches. Symi has
thrived on its boat building industry and sponge diving fleet. Sights:
Monastery of the Archangel Michael, museums, mansions, architecture
HALKI
Has been a wealthy island since antiquity, judging from the
coins found here. Visitors will be amazed by the stone houses built
it tiers like an amphitheater, the medieval castle occupying the site
of the ancient acropolis and the wonderful beaches.
RHODES
Splendid
beaches, varied vegetation, numerous cultural sites, long summers,
and the largest medieval and ancient town make Rhodes undoubtedly
the most attractive and largest of the Dodecanese islands. Sights:
Rhodes Old O\Town and the Castle of the Grand Masters with its moats
and eleven gates to the city, the Valley of the Butterflies, temples,
centuries-old houses, the famous town of Lindos and its Acropolis,
Aquarium, Rhodian Park. The village of Emponas is known for its wine
making.
KARPATHOS
A line of mountain separates the two island sides;
one fertile and green, the other rockier. Modern architecture is combined
with traditional style in both the exterior and interior of the houses.
Villages that have been inhabited since the 10th century, help make
citizens take pride in maintaining their traditions. The citizens
still speak a dialect that contains several Dorian words and idioms.
Sights: ancient ruins. Long isolated mountain villages still carry
on Medieval customs.
